Patrick P ★ 5 · Sep 2025Nice place to chill. Very small campground. 1 loop. Very primitive. Vault toilets and a pump for water. River is fun. Refreshing. Also nice to go to Gould Park (exit 165, then right and right). Rocks on Hampshire Rocks Rd. nice. It's not fancy. No planned activities like Thousand Trails. Make your own fun. :) Road noise from I-80 dies down at night and almost sounds like the Ocean. :)

For me I never really noticed it till we talked about it as it was just a background noise. The river is very nice to swim in. Several swimming holes around the campground. Definitely want to come back.

About
Hampshire Rocks Campground sits on the north bank of the upper South Yuba River in a stand of lodgepole pines, where the river runs gently through a mix of shady pools and sunlit gravel bars. The facility is run by Tahoe National Forest and offers 24 single-family campsites; each site is set up for both tents and RVs and comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring, while vault toilets and potable drinking water are available at the loop. Some sites sit right along the river, making it easy to step down for a swim or cast for rainbow trout, and the historic California Emigrant Trail actually …
