Sleeping in a vehicle outside a campground is restricted around the lake: on National Forest land in the basin, dispersed camping ("vehicle camping or overnighting") isn't permitted. [USDA Forest Service]

Campgrounds in our Lake Tahoe sections with a published length (official limit, or Recreation.gov's site list) — so you can check your van or truck camper against it. Tent-only, walk-in and boat-in camps are left out. Distances are straight-line. Official facts checked 2026-10-18; listing facts update with each feed refresh.

Overnight rules outside campgrounds

South Lake Tahoe's city code counts sleeping in a vehicle as camping and prohibits it in city parks, on public streets, rights-of-way and sidewalks in residential plan areas and the tourist core, within 100 ft of transit stops or permanent campgrounds, and near waterways; on private property you need the owner's consent. [City of South Lake Tahoe City Code § 4.70.240][City of South Lake Tahoe City Code § 8.05.110]

In the Emerald Bay area overnight parking isn't allowed, and the maximum vehicle length is 18 ft. [California State Parks]

In Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, dispersed camping isn't allowed anywhere within park boundaries. [Nevada State Parks]
