Fire rules and permits

National Forest lands at Lake Tahoe are under year-round fire restrictions: campfires (wood, charcoal and other solid fuels) only in open, designated campgrounds with permanently installed metal fire pits or grills. [USDA Forest Service]

Elsewhere on California's national forests, a free campfire permit is required year-round for campfires, charcoal barbecues, gas stoves and lanterns outside developed recreation areas — and current fire restrictions still apply. [USDA Forest Service][State of California (ca.gov)]

Maps and the backcountry

Motor Vehicle Use Maps show which forest roads are open to which vehicles; the Lake Tahoe Basin and the Pacific Southwest Region publish them online. [USDA Forest Service][USDA Forest Service]

Desolation Wilderness requires an entry permit year-round, a bear canister for overnight visits, and has an overnight quota May through October; wood and charcoal fires aren't permitted. [USDA Forest Service]

Most National Forest campgrounds at Lake Tahoe have a 14-day limit per calendar year and six people per site. In Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, dispersed camping isn't allowed anywhere within park boundaries. [USDA Forest Service][Nevada State Parks]
